Back to running

Back to running

A return to running after time off, an injury or a long break from the road. We start where you are and add what you can handle, in an order you can follow.

Is this for you

This care is for you if

  • You have been told to stop and now you can start

Your surgeon or physician has cleared you, and you want a plan.

  • You have been off for months

You want to know how to add miles without repeating what happened.

  • You are afraid to start

You want someone to test you first so you know what you can do.

  • You are racing again

You have a date and want the weeks before it to hold together.

What a visit looks like

What happens when you come in

  1. 01

Step 1: We start with what you can do now

Strength, balance and a short run test, one leg against the other.

  2. 02

Step 2: We set the next step

A written return, one step at a time, with what to do if it flares up.

  3. 03

Step 3: We check in as it grows

You come back as the plan changes, and we adjust it with your coach or your running log.

Good to know

Who treats you, how long it takes, how it is paid for

  • Who treats you

A licensed physical therapist: Trinidad Espino or Ezekiel Ivey. Their license lines are in the footer of every page.

    Meet the team
  • What decides how many visits

What you can do now, what your physician or surgeon has said, how each step feels and what you are training for. Return to running is a process, and we never promise a date.

  • How it is paid for

We bill most PPO plans and Medicare, and the front desk checks your benefits before you come in. If you pay yourself, you get a written estimate first.

    How fees work

When to see a doctor first

See a physician first, or call 911, if you have chest pain or trouble breathing, a sudden severe headache, numbness in the groin or loss of bladder or bowel control, a new weakness in a leg, or a fall or blow that could have broken a bone. If we find something at your visit that needs a physician, we tell you and help you get there. If a surgeon or physician has set limits on your activity, we follow them and ask before we go past them.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

In Arizona, you can start without a referral. Your plan may still ask for one, and our front desk will tell you before your visit.

How many visits will I need?

We cannot say before we have met you. What decides it: what we find in your assessment, what you are training for, how your body responds and how close your next race is. We tell you at each visit what comes next.

Will it hurt?

We work within what you can tolerate. Some tests bring on the feeling you came in with, and you can stop any step.
